Your Cabinets Are Ageing Your Kitchen But Replacement Isn’t the Only Answer
In Halifax and across HRM, we see it constantly: homeowners with solid, well-built cabinets good bones, good layout, perfectly functional who feel stuck. The finish is peeling, the oak is yellowing, or the style just hasn’t aged well. Contractors quote them $20,000+ for replacement and 6 weeks of kitchen downtime.
Most of those kitchens don’t need new cabinets. They need new finishes. And done properly with the right products, the right surface preparation, and professional spray application off-site refinished cabinets are indistinguishable from factory-new. They’re harder, smoother, and more durable than a brush-and-roller job could ever be.
Painters Halifax has refined this process over 30 years of Halifax-area work. We’ve painted and refinished cabinets in heritage homes in the South End, modern townhouses in Clayton Park, older bungalows in Dartmouth, and everything in between. We know what works on Nova Scotia homes — and we know when to tell a homeowner that replacement genuinely is the better option.
Our Cabinet services
From kitchen cabinet refinishing Halifax families rely on to full transformations, our services are tailored to protect your space and elevate every surface. We focus on cabinet systems, not walls, so every product choice and technique is tuned for durability, clean lines, and a refined finish.
Cabinet refinishing
Restore existing wood with a satin-smooth finish. Our refinishing includes repairs, stain-blocking primer, and a durable topcoat that feels factory new. This option is perfect for solid wood doors that still have great bones but need a full visual reset.
We remove lingering oils, even out wear patterns, and rebuild crisp edges so the final finish reads as intentional, not patched.
Cabinet painting
Refresh doors and boxes with a modern sprayed finish in your chosen palette. We protect countertops, floors, and appliances with a contained workflow that keeps dust down and air quality high.
Our cabinet painting process delivers a consistent sheen and the tactile smoothness clients expect from custom cabinetry.
Hardware + door upgrades
Swap pulls, hinges, or door styles for a subtle or bold shift. We align every door and leave a crisp, polished feel.
This is the detail work that makes refinishing feel complete—soft-close hardware, hidden hinges, and balanced spacing for a uniform reveal.
Cabinet care + touch-ups
After the project, we offer care guidance and optional touch-up visits. It is a simple way to preserve the finish and keep your kitchen looking immaculate year after year.
If you host often or your kitchen is the heart of a busy household, this extra support keeps your cabinets looking showroom-ready.

How We Deliver a Factory-Quality Finish
The difference between cabinet painting that lasts 10 years and cabinet painting that chips in 2 comes down entirely to preparation and application method. Here’s exactly how we approach every project.
On-Site Consultation & Colour Selection
Cory visits your kitchen, assesses your cabinet material (solid wood, MDF, thermofoil, laminate, or previously painted), checks adhesion, and discusses your goals. We bring colour samples and help you select a tone that works with your countertops, backsplash, flooring, and Halifax’s natural light.
Important: We do not refinish cabinets with wax coatings or damaged thermofoil peeling from its substrate — we’ll tell you this upfront, not after we’ve started.
Detailed Written Quote & Project Schedule
You receive a fixed, itemized quote — breaking down materials, labour, and timeline — within 24 hours. We schedule the project around your household. You’ll know exactly which days the kitchen will be affected and for how long.
We provide a day-by-day schedule so you can plan meals and family routines. Most kitchens remain partially functional throughout the project.
Door & Drawer Removal — Everything Labelled
Every door, drawer front, and removable component is carefully removed and labelled for exact reassembly. Hardware is removed and bagged. We protect your countertops, floors, and appliances before a single piece of prep work begins.
Fixed frames (the face frames between doors on framed kitchens) are prepped and painted on-site using the same product — carefully masked to protect adjacent surfaces.
Off-Site Preparation & Spray Application
This is what separates professional results from DIY. Doors and drawer fronts go to our spray shop — a controlled, dust-free environment — where they’re cleaned, deglossed, sanded, and primed. Stain-blocking primer goes on for dark-to-light or light-to-dark colour changes. Finish coats are applied by spray in 4–6 passes, building a smooth, hard film that cures to a consistent sheen across every surface.
We use waterborne alkyd, waterborne lacquer, or solvent-based lacquer depending on your cabinet material and how much wear your kitchen takes. We’ll explain the recommendation and why.
Reinstallation & Hardware Fitting
Finished doors are returned and reinstalled with precision. Hinges are adjusted for even reveals. If you’ve chosen new hardware, we drill and fit it — checking alignment and spacing before final tightening. Everything is checked for smooth, level operation.
Walkthrough, Touch-Ups & Written Warranty
We walk through the completed kitchen with you. Any touch-ups are done before we pack up. You receive a written 3-year warranty covering peeling, blistering, or adhesion failure due to workmanship. If anything fails under normal use, we come back and fix it — no questions asked.
We also leave care instructions for your new finish: which cleaners to avoid, how long before the coating fully cures, and what to do if you get a chip.
Why Halifax Homeowners Choose Refinishing Over Replacement
Save $10,000–$35,000
Cabinet replacement in Halifax currently runs between $15,000 and $40,000 once you factor in materials, installation, countertop relocation, and the inevitable plumbing and electrical surprises. Professional refinishing delivers a result that looks identical for $1,500–$5,000.
Back in Your Kitchen in 4–6 Days
Replacement means 3–8 weeks of a demolished kitchen, contractor access, and eating out every night. Refinishing is a planned, 4–6 day process — often with the kitchen partially usable — and we clean up completely at the end of each day.
Less Waste, Better for NS
Ripping out functional cabinets sends hundreds of kilograms of wood, MDF, and laminate to a Halifax-area landfill. Refinishing keeps your existing cabinets in service for another decade or more — a meaningful environmental choice.
Keeps a Layout That Works
Replacement forces you into a redesign. If your current layout is well-planned — good work triangle, right amount of storage, counters at the right height — refinishing preserves all of that while updating the look entirely.
| Criteria | Replacement | Refinishing |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | ❌ $15,000–$40,000 | ✅ $1,500–$5,000 |
| Timeline | ❌ 3–8 weeks | ✅ 4–6 days |
| Disruption | ❌ Full kitchen demo | ✅ Minimal, planned |
| Layout change | ❌ Forces redesign | ✅ Keeps what works |
| Waste | ❌ Landfill cabinets | ✅ Eco-friendly choice |

Professional-Grade Coatings Only
Cabinet coatings aren’t the same as wall paint. The wrong product — even an expensive wall paint — will chip, block (stick to itself when doors close), or feel soft months after application. We use cabinet-specific coatings chosen for your substrate and your household’s wear level.
Waterborne Alkyd
The workhorse. Low odour, easy cleanup, but cures to a hard, enamel-like finish that resists knocks and cleaning products. Available in a wide sheen range.
- Best for: most painted finishes, busy households
- Cure time: 21–30 days for full hardness
- Brands: Benjamin Moore Advance, SW Emerald Urethane
- Sheen options: matte through gloss
Waterborne Lacquer
Fast-drying, very hard, and produces an exceptionally smooth, contemporary finish in spray application. The choice for a modern, furniture-grade look.
- Best for: modern kitchens, slab-door styles
- Cure time: 7–14 days, faster surface dry
- Brands: Milesi, Sayerlack waterborne systems
- Typically matte or satin sheen
Solvent-Based Lacquer
The hardest, most durable finish we apply. Used for high-traffic kitchens or when maximum chip resistance is required. Applied exclusively off-site due to fumes.
- Best for: heavy-use kitchens, rental properties
- Cure time: 7 days to full hardness
- Brands: ML Campbell, Sherwin-Williams CAB-Acrylic
- Requires off-site application — never in your home

FAQs
How much does kitchen cabinet painting cost in Halifax?
A standard Halifax kitchen — typically 20–35 cabinet doors and drawer fronts — runs between $1,500 and $3,500 for a full refinish or repaint. Larger kitchens or those requiring significant prep work (stripping old finishes, repairing surfaces) can run $3,500–$5,500. We provide a fixed, written quote after the on-site consultation, so you know the exact number before we start — no surprises at the end.
How long will the project take, and can I use my kitchen?
Most Halifax kitchen cabinet projects take 4–6 working days from start to final reinstallation. Day 1: removal and on-site prep. Days 2–4: off-site spray work on doors and drawers. Day 5–6: reinstallation, hardware, touch-ups, and walkthrough. The kitchen sink and fridge remain accessible throughout — it’s the doors and workspace that are temporarily out of commission. We provide a daily schedule so you can plan around it.
Will it look as good as new cabinets? Can you really tell the difference?
When done properly — off-site spray application, correct primer, correct coating — the finish is indistinguishable from factory-sprayed cabinetry. The key word is “properly.” Brush-and-roll cabinet painting done on-site will always show brush marks and have inconsistent sheen. Our off-site spray process eliminates that entirely. We encourage you to ask for references from previous Halifax projects and look at our portfolio before committing.
How long will it last? What’s the warranty?
We provide a 3-year written warranty on all cabinet refinishing work. In practice, a properly applied cabinet coating using the right product for the substrate will last 8–15 years under normal household use. The variables that affect longevity are: cleaning products used (avoid anything with bleach or ammonia), how much the kitchen is used, and whether the coating had time to fully cure before heavy use (we recommend light use for the first 30 days while the coating reaches full hardness).
Can you paint laminate or thermofoil cabinets?
Laminate (Melamine) cabinets can be painted successfully with the right primer — we use adhesion-promoting primers specifically formulated for slick surfaces. Thermofoil is more complicated: if the thermofoil is fully adhered and in good condition, we can paint over it with the right primer. If it’s peeling, bubbling, or lifting at edges, painting over it won’t work — the peeling will continue under the new paint. We assess this during the estimate and won’t take on work we don’t believe will succeed.
Do I need to empty my cabinets before you arrive?
Yes — please remove everything from inside the cabinets and clear the countertops. We protect floors and appliances, but having clear countertops and empty interiors makes the job faster and cleaner. We don’t paint the interior of cabinet boxes unless specifically requested.
Do you paint just the doors, or the cabinet boxes too?
Both. Doors and drawer fronts are removed and painted off-site in our spray shop. The cabinet boxes — including the face frames (the frames around the door openings on framed kitchens) — are painted on-site using the same product, carefully masked to protect countertops, walls, and adjacent surfaces. The result is a cohesive finish across the entire kitchen.
Do you do the work yourself, or do you subcontract it?
We never subcontract. Every person who enters your home is part of our permanent team — vetted, trained, and accountable. Cory personally oversees every cabinet project. This is a non-negotiable part of how we operate, and it’s why our quality is consistent across every job we take on.
