KCabinet painting and refinishing for Cole Harbour kitchens

Your cabinets probably do not need replacing. They need a fresh finish.

Years of cooking, steam and daily use wear down a cabinet’s surface long before they harm its structure. In most kitchens we visit, the boxes are solid, the doors hang straight and the layout works well. What looks wrong is the finish.

Cole Harbour grew fast in the 1970s and 1980s, once Highway 111 was finished and Cole Harbour Road was widened. Homes in Forest Hills, Colby Village and nearby streets often still have their original kitchens, with dated wood tones or paint that has dulled and chipped. Rather than paying for a full tear-out, many owners here choose to keep the good cabinetry and change how it looks.

Ron Cann leads every project, backed by more than 25 years of hands-on painting experience, and he trained each member of the crew himself. Preparation takes 40 to 50 percent of our time on any job. For cabinets, that means thorough degreasing, repairs, sanding and priming before the first coat of finish.

Kitchen Cabinet Painting

Choose this when you want a new colour. We apply an opaque, sprayed finish that works on laminate, MDF, veneer and wood, so you can move from honey oak to crisp white, soft grey, deep green or anything else you like.

Typical Halifax kitchen: $1,500 to $5,000

Kitchen Cabinet Refinishing

Choose this when your cabinets are solid wood and you want to keep their natural look. We inspect the wood and the existing coating first, then explain what the finished result will look like and whether the grain will stay visible.

Priced after your in-home estimate

Six reasons Cole Harbour homeowners refinish instead of replace

Far Less Money

Painting usually costs $1,500 to $5,000. New cabinets often cost $15,000 to $35,000 or more.

You Keep Cooking

Doors and drawer fronts are finished separately, and you can use the kitchen about a day after reinstallation.

Nothing moves

Plumbing, counters and walls stay exactly where they are. Only the finish changes.

Good bones stay

The solid cabinets in many 1970s and 1980s Cole Harbour homes deserve to be kept, not hauled away.

Much less waste

Reusing what you have means no pile of old doors and boxes headed for the landfill.

Made for coastal air

Cole Harbour faces the Atlantic, and humidity plus kitchen steam test every finish. We prime for adhesion and use tough coatings.

Cole Harbour Cabinet Painters You Can Trust

Painters Halifax was great to work with. They came out to give me a quote for painting the exterior of my house and the interior of my garage. I had several questions for them and they were more than happy to answer all of my questions and give me advice. They came out and gave me a quote and did a good job painting the house. They were friendly and professional. I would definitely hire them again.

It is really good to find a painting company that can provide you with excellent service. I really liked the professionalism that the painters had. They were able to provide me with a price estimate the same day I called them. The crew showed up on time and were able to start the project the same day. I am very pleased with the job that was done. I will be calling them for any painting needs I may have in the future.

Great service. I called the next day to ask for an estimate and they were able to come out the same day. They gave me a really great price for the work that needed to be done. I highly recommend them.

Our kitchen needed to be spruced up and what a great job this team did for us. We can’t thank them enough. We couldn’t necessarily afford replacing all of out kitchen cabinets but they showed us a way to just refinish them and save a boat load of money. Thank you.

The coatings we use

We choose the product to suit your cabinet material and how hard your kitchen works. We use low-VOC options, and zero-VOC choices are available for sensitive individuals and families with young children.

Benjamin Moore ADVANCE
Prized for its very smooth finish. It takes longer to cure fully.

Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel
A hard-wearing finish that can be recoated sooner.

INSL-X Cabinet Coat
A strong choice for laminate, melamine and stubborn factory finishes.

With good prep, a sprayed finish commonly lasts 5 to 10 years. We work on solid wood, MDF, veneer and sound laminate. Peeling thermofoil cannot be painted successfully, and we will tell you that before you pay a deposit.

Cabinet work is core not an add-on

You work with the same local team from the first visit to the final walkthrough. Before you pay a deposit, we give you an honest assessment of whether your cabinets are good candidates. If they are not, we say so.

Your fixed written quote lists labour, materials and prep. No hourly billing, no surprise fees.

Frequently Asked Question

Most cabinet painting jobs in the Halifax area land between $1,500 and $5,000. Where yours falls depends on how many doors and drawer fronts you have, what shape the existing finish is in, how dramatic the colour change is and what repairs are needed. For comparison, new cabinets commonly run $15,000 to $35,000 or more. After a free visit we give you a fixed written quote, good for 30 days, so there are no surprises.

Plan on roughly 4 to 6 days from start to finish. Doors and drawer fronts come off and are finished separately from the boxes, and you can use your kitchen about a day after everything is reinstalled. Give the finish 7 to 10 days before any heavy scrubbing so it can harden fully. A full replacement, by contrast, often takes 3 to 6 weeks.

Painting gives you a new colour with an opaque finish. Refinishing restores solid wood and lets its natural character show. At your estimate we look at the wood, the current coating and the look you want, then tell you which route makes sense and what to expect, including whether grain will remain visible.

On open-grained woods such as oak, some texture usually remains unless the grain is filled first. Some people like that look and some do not. We talk it through during the estimate so you can choose the result you want before any work starts.

Sound laminate and melamine can be painted using a bonding primer and the right cabinet coating. Thermofoil that is peeling or lifting cannot hold paint, and we will say so plainly before you commit to anything.

Spraying lays down thin, even coats with no brush marks or roller texture. We use HVLP equipment in a dust-controlled setup over a high-adhesion primer, which gives a smoother, harder-wearing surface than you can get by hand.

A sprayed finish over properly prepared cabinets typically holds up for 5 to 10 years. Cooking grease, steam and heavy daily use are tough on any kitchen, which is why degreasing and sanding take so much of our time.

We remove and label every door, drawer and piece of hardware, then cover floors, counters and appliances. Next come degreasing, repairs, sanding and priming. Across all our projects, 40 to 50 percent of the time goes into preparation, because that is what decides how long a finish lasts.

They come off during the job and we label them so every door goes back where it started. You can reuse your hardware or switch to something new. Raise it at your estimate and we will plan around it.

Qualifying projects carry a written two-year workmanship warranty. Ongoing moisture damage, structural movement, impact damage and failure of an existing underlying coating are not covered. Complete terms come with your project documents.
